Biofilms

A biofilm represents every cluster of micro-organisms and their extracellular products forming a link. They are usually attached to a fixed surface as this is the only way they can form communities. The growth of bacterial communities in the form of biofilms is a dominant way of growth of bacteria in nature.

Biofilms represent a biological system with a high level of organization where bacteria form a regulated and functional organization. Biofilms allow for the conservation of bacteria in certain niches and ensure their survival.

After an inseparable surface attachment, some microorganisms are able to create a protective layer of Exopolysaccharides (EPS) that makes it more difficult to eradicate them with antibiotics. EPS protects micro-organisms against external influences but still leaves nutrients to flow into the community.

Specific bacterial enzymes are required to disrupt the individual parts of the biofilm.
