Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid that occurs in nature along with zeaxanthin, a closely related carotenoid. Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in the macula and lens, as well as in the brain, skin, breast and cervical tissues. Both lutein and zeaxanthin protect the macula from degradation, which is commonly associated with aging and oxidative stress. The macula is responsible for focusing and distinguishing colors. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in dark green leafy vegetables. While the average U.S. lutein intake is only 2 mg per day, other populations consume up to 20 to 25 mg per day.

Jarrow Formulas® lutein is obtained from marigold petals. Each soft gel contains 20 mg of lutein (net yield) in the form of free lutein, in the form found in the macula.
