In an adult’s gut there are about 1.5 kg of bacteria. Those “good” bacteria that we have in the gut are very important because they have an impact on digestion and metabolism of food, they are linked directly to the brain and can affect just about every organ in the body.

One of the biggest threats to intestinal bacteria are antibiotics. Antibiotics are, as the name suggests, anti (against) biotic (life), destroyers of living organisms and mostly this is a good thing (e.g. when they must destroy the pathogenic bacteria with which we have become infected). Unfortunately, today, antibiotics are overused as is being recognized even by the whole of medicine (unfortunately not recognised in animal usage). Orally ingested antibiotics always come first in contact with intestinal bacteria, among which most are beneficial to our body. Unfortunately, most antibiotics are not as selective that they can distinguish between good and bad bacteria.
