Jarrow formulae bile consists of a mixture of highly concentrated bile acids, also called bile salts. The body needs bile salts for successful fat metabolism.

What is bile?

Bile is a dark green to the yellowish brown liquid that is produced in the body by the liver. It is mostly composed of water, bile salts and cholesterol. After production is collected in the gallbladder, from where the presence of food triggers it to be squeezed into duodenum.

Digestion of Fats

Digestion in the body begins with chewing food in the mouth. It then travels down the throat, where it meets with gastric acid and some digestive enzymes. When gastric acid does its job it leaves the stomach and goes into the duodenum where the body poures the digestive juices of two organs over it: the digestive enzymes of the pancreas, and the bile of the gallbladder (or liver).

Here happens the magic of fat absorprtion. The first step requires bile that emulsifies the whole mixture of food from the stomach, meaning that it disperses them so that enzymes (lipase) can then degrade it to its parts (fatty acids and glycerol). Additionaly it also deacidifys the contents from the stomach.

When there are problems with the flow of bile the digestion of fat is also weakened.
