NAC or N-acetyl cysteine is one of the building blocks of glutathione. You will also find it under the titles Acetylcysteine or N-Acetylcysteine. NAC is a well-known dietary supplement with strong effects on metabolism. In medicine they even use it as a drug against liver poisoning with paracetamol (painkillers tablets). It is also used in medicine to release thickened mucous membranes. It is therefore a common ingredient in influenza and cold medication.
Acetylcysteine was patented long ago in 1960 and is approved for use since 1968. It is on the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organisation and is one of the most effective and safe medicines.
As a dietary supplement it is available in smaller concentrations and is not intended for treatment.
It can be very useful for reducing hagover symptoms. Alcohol causes greater need to detoxify and with this a greater need for glutathione and acetyl cysteine. It can also be useful for chronic alcoholism.
There is also an interesting link between the lack of NAC and the susceptibility to addiction (drugs, nicotine, alcohol). The lack of it can reduce EAAT2 receptors expression in NAcc which is related to addictions.
