Copper is an essential mineral that the human body needs in small quantities (trace). It’s in charge of a few different metabolic processes. The role of copper in the body

Its primary role in the body is as a cofactor in enzymes from the family metalloenzymes, e.g. NADH dehydrogenase-2, Cu, un-superoxide dismutase (SOD1), Cu Amin oxidase and cytochrome c oxidase.

These enzymes are strongly tied to the functioning of the immune system, producing energy and protecting the body from oxidative stress (e.g. SOD converts toxic superoxidal molecules into peroxide that the body can excrete).

In its free form, copper stimulates the immune cells. Deficiency in copper may supress the immune response to antigens and can suppress innate immunity, which is manifested as neutropenia (reduced number of neutrophils). Copper also affects the functioning of macrophages, yet another immune system cells and thus plays a role in regulating inflammatory processes in the body.

Attention at too high copper intake! Copper must be balanced in the body (especially with zinc). Too high copper values have been associated with brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Safe intake of copper is 3mg per day. Do not exceed the daily dose, especially if you take the it long term.
