LifeExtension Neuro-Mag®
Magnesium threonate is probably the best magnesium form available. You might know it under several trademark names like Magtein, MagMind or Neuro-Mag. They all contain the same, extra special form of magnesium.
LifeExtension Neuro-Mag is produced to enhance memory and cognitive function.
Its specific trait is that it freely passes the blood-brain barier, which means that it can affect the brain and nerve tissues directly. You can expect a stronger and faster effects specific to the brain and psychological health. While impacting on the nervous system it works well against headaches.
Additionally, it also does not irritate the intestine as it is absorbed by 90% or more, so you need less than ordinary magnesium (absorption of magnesium oxide, the most common form of magnesium in supplements is less than 10%).
Magnesium is one of the most important minerals in the human body since approximately 400 metabolic processes depend on it. Because our soil and therefore diet commonly lack magnesium it is one of the most effective and desirable dietary supplements.
Magnesium is probably one of the few supplements that is worth supplementing with constantly because the body needs large quantities that are increasingly difficult to obtain from food. In particular, these population groups have high risk of deficiency:
- Older (over 80% of patients older than 60 years have a magnesium deficiency) and
- Athletes and Diabetics
Magnesium threonate in powder
LifeExtension differs from others as it is in powder form and suited to make magnesium rich drinks with a natural tropical punch flavor. All ingredients, including sweeteners and flavors are from natural, non GMO origin. Suitable also for vegetarians and vegans.
Even though magnesium is a salt and its taste is quite specific and unpleasant for most, LifeExtension has managed to create a great magnesium threonate mix with natural flavors, to make drinks, that actualy taste OK.
Why are there such significant differences between magnesiums?
Magnesiums come in different forms, which differ greatly. Magnesium is a very unstable molecule, so it has to always be tied to a carrier element either in nature or supplements (and also food). This carrier element and the connection to magnesium determines how magnesium in our body will be absorbed.
Magnesium as an electrolyte affects the osmotic pressure in your body (and also gut) so the body doesn’t want much of it there. When there’s too much magnesium in the intestines, the body will be flush it with water and try to get rid of it as soon as possible. The result is softer stools or even diarrhea. From this bowel irritation derives the laxative effect of magnesium.
Bonding with different elements the molecules are bigger or smaller (and consequently also tablets will be of different sizes). First of all, it is true that in one small pill you cannot obtain a sufficient daily amount of magnesium (or it is of poor quality and will not be absorbed).
When small molecules (such as oxide, chloride, sulphate), absorption is generally very poor (around 10%). Large molecules (e.g. glycinate, Bisglycinate, turate, threonate, malate) are absorbed 90% or more. With this you will get more magnesium in the body with less intestinal irritation.
