Benfotiamine – better vitamin B1
Benfotiamine is a derivative of vitamin B1 (thiamine), which, in addition to better bioactivity and absorption, has additional functions in the body.
Benfotiamine is registered in some countries as a medicine (also in Slovenia) against diabetic neuropathy (pain caused by complications due to diabetes), under the name Milgamma. As a dietary supplement, Benfotiamine should not be used for treatment.
Because Benfotiamine is more BIO available than regular vitamin B1, it raises thiamine levels better in muscles, brain, liver, and kidneys. Most of this effect is due to fat solubility and better transport from the gut into the bloodstream and then into the cells, which also means that benfotiamine needs to be ingested with a meal.
